May Leadership Update

Dear North Star Circuit Instructors and Fans:

On behalf of the North Star Circuit, I am pleased to introduce myself and my co-lead for the 2016/2017 NSC Board of Directors:

Jonathan Glatfelter, Vice President
Jon brings a long history of experience to the circuit as a performer and an instructor. He has been a member of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, Minnesota Brass Inc., True North Winter Guard and Lux Independent. He also has instructed with the Chippewa Falls Marching Cardinals, the Rosemount High School Marching Band and Eclipse Independent, and he most recently joined the River City Rhythm Drum & Bugle Corps color guard staff for the 2016 season. This will be Jonathan’s fourth season serving on the NSC Board of Directors having held a Member at Large position in 2014 and 2015. He will complete the second term of his role as Vice President for the 2017 season.

Bridget Farley-Honkanen,  President
My background in the activity started back in 1975 in the Rosettes Cadet Guard and continues with my undying passion for the pageantry arts (my family has been in the activity since 1962). I was a marching member of the Rosettes and MBI Winter Guard as well as Minnesota Brass Drum Corps. I’ve instructed a number of high school programs in Minnesota as well as Royal Guard Independent. I’m rejoining the board of directors after a 20+ year hiatus (my husband Mike “Porkchop” Honkanen was the president at that time). The activity has also stayed in the family with our daughter Patricia participating as a member of Irondale (I was band booster president for 2 of her 5 years with the program) and MBI Color Guards as well as a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard and my husband being an alumni of the 27th Lancers Drum Corps. Our family has also sponsored the Jim Zika Rosettes Marching Scholarship for the last 10 years and is honored to support some of the best and brightest performers coming out of the state of Minnesota.

As planning for the upcoming year is under way, Jonathan and I, along with the Board of Directors, are developing a strategic plan involving the following initiatives:
• Update and refine all communication channels
• Develop a new skin and content for the circuit website
• Schedule our annual student and instructor clinics and begin to plan for North Star Circuit hosted events
• Improve logistical roles and responsibility documents to share with show organizers
• Create a mentorship program for new instructors to interact with more experienced program directors to exchange ideas and insights
• Determine best time to solicit feedback from program directors and develop plans to improve processes
• Create more opportunities for judges and staff to have access to current education
Instructors and fans should keep an eye out for a monthly leadership update posted to all NSC communication channels. Also, look out for an upcoming introduction to the entire Board of Directors next month. The board is a diverse and extremely talented group of individuals who will have a substantial impact on activities in the months to come.

Sincerely,

Bridget and Jonathan
